Is that snake poisonous?

June 29th, 2010 2:54 pm | by Friends of the Parks by Glenda Mink

What do I do if I see a snake?  These questions and more will be answered by Scott Spaulding, Saturday, July 10 as he presents “Snakes of Polk County” from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., in the Workshop at Polk’s Nature Discovery Center, Circle B Bar Reserve, 4399 Winter Lake Road, Lakeland.

Scott Spaulding’s informative presentation explores the different types of snakes in Central Florida, giving you a look at snakes in a whole new light.  While there are six venomous snake species in Florida, only four can be found in our area:  Eastern diamondback, pgymy rattler, cottonmouth, and coral snake.  Mr. Spaulding, manager of Colt Creek State Park, will help you identify these from the very common nonvenomous  and helpful snakes that many mistake as dangerous.

LATER THAT SAME DAY:  “Goodness Snakes Alive” part of the Discovery Kids series will be also presented by Scott Spaulding from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.  Although designed especially for kids, adults too will enjoy the interaction and information on what makes a snake a snake, what snakes need to live, and what makes snakes different from other reptiles.

Registeration for all workshops begin the first of each month.  Visit the Discovery Center, Tuesday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and Sunday Noon -4:00 p.m., or call 668-4673.  Programs are FREE!

Friends of the Parks Foundation is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization created to ensure quality recreational opportunties now and in future years for all Polk County citizens and our many friends who come to visit.  Join our efforts!  Go to www.friendsoftheparks.net to learn more.
